G-Force Review

A Review - By Gaetano Prestia

NOTE: This review is for the XBOX 360, Playstation 3, Wii and DS versions of G-Force. The review notes any differences between the versions.

A game based on a movie about guinea pigs saving the world. There’s no way in HELL that game could be any good. Not only is it a game based off a movie (and a pretty crappy movie at that), but it’s a movie-game on Wii, a console that is becoming more and more accustomed to shovel ware. Well, believe it or not, but G-Force is actually not all that bad. In fact, it’s actually pretty good. Reviews were scalding for the film and you can imagine how surprising it was to find how superior the game was to the actual source material. One could probably say that the movie was based off the game and not the other way around. That would actually make more sense.

If there’s one thing this game really fails to do, it’s tell a compelling and interesting story. While the main market for this game probably isn’t looking for a strong narrative, some explanation as to why you’re doing what you’re doing and why these guinea pigs can talk would have been great. Instead, you’re pretty much just dropped straight into the action. If you look at it one way, it doesn’t really do a good job of making you keen to see the flick because the narrative is weak. If you look at it another way, you won’t care about the characters enough to want to see the film, which is good, because the film sucks.

What we do know is that Leonard Saber is using kitchen appliances to help take over the world.

Yep. Kitchen appliances.

Thankfully, the game’s lacking story is made-up through the actual gameplay and presentation. Even if you’re a fan of the flick and you want to get your kids a fun and exciting adventure for the Wii or 360/PS3, this title will more than suffice. It has plenty of enjoyable elements for the younger crowd and even offers a decent experience for the more mature gaming audience. Yes, believe it or not, G-Force can be fun at times.

A vast majority of G-Force is third-person shooter. You’ll take control of Darwin as you blast your way through stages using the jetpack connected to his back. There are plenty of great weapons at his disposal, such as the Plasma gun for long-range shooting or the machine gun for effective combat. There’s a great little gadget called the NanoHacker, which turns any enemy machines into your allies, making for some pretty funny and crazy moments during the heat of battle.

The Electro-Whip differs from the other weapons in that it isn’t assigned to the d-pad and doesn’t have any ammo. It’s always accessible and is a great way to take out enemies up close. Once you do take out foes, they’ll drop health packs, ammo and the game’s currency in SaberSense Chips, which are used for weapon and health upgrades accessed through kiosks in the levels.

Throughout the game Darwin will be accompanied by Mooch the fly. The two actually make up quite the effective duo, as Mooch is used to reach places Darwin would otherwise have no chance of reaching. He can flip switches, deactivate enemies and scan an area for any foes before Darwin enters. There are also moments when Mooch can enter into air ducts and investigate areas within a certain amount of time.

The combat itself is the biggest surprise packet. It’s not overly challenging as you’ll mostly come up across the same old enemies, but the aiming techniques, double jumps and Mooch gameplay are all really solid. Furthermore, some enemies really require tactics to take down and this is where the Saberlizer comes in to play. This weapon scans an enemy and points out its weakness. There are some enemies that take quite a bit of ammo to take down if you don’t hit their designated weak spot, so the Saberlizer can be really effective when you’re in a bit of a pickle.

While the combat has plenty of shining lights, the game does falter in certain aspects. For one, it holds your hand way too much. It’s understandable that it’s a game aimed at children, but beyond taking out the enemies, there’s no real challenge in moving through the otherwise well-designed levels. It would have been fantastic if this were more of a free-roaming adventure that gave you the freedom to move and tackle missions on your own accord.

The challenge just takes a massive hit because of this and it doesn’t help that each mission goes for way too long. It would have been better had the missions been broken up a bit to offer a more flowing adventure, but you’ll often find yourself playing the same mission for about an hour and a half. Each mission is broken up into little objectives, but these don’t really help distinguish the missions from one another.

The 360 and PS3 modes control pretty much exactly the same as the Wii version, although the latter doesn’t include the horrendously executed 3D levels. If you were looking forward to the 3D in the Wii version, you’re not really missing out on much.

Graphically, G-Force has a surprisingly crisp presentation. The 360 and PS3 versions obviously look smoother than the Wii version, but they all hold up pretty well. Considering the budget and timeframe this game probably had, it looks pretty good.

The DS version of G-Force offers a very similar experience to the console versions, albeit some minor differences. There’s no voice-acting and the sound is of a considerably lesser quality, which is understandable. There are some great little mini-games that take advantage of the touch-screen, such as hacking into systems and connecting wires using the stylus. Most of them are pretty cool and really help distinguish the DS version from the console versions. Most of the same weapons make an appearance and while the mission structure is a bit different (the DS version was made by a different developer), the experience feels more or less the same. It might actually be worth it if you’re after a more unique handheld experience that’s cheaper, rather than the console version.

The Final Verdict

G-Force is simple and holds your hand through the overly long levels. But the combat gameplay itself kind of makes it worth trying out. If you’ve got kids and want a fun, short and simple action game, this is definitely the title for them.

Gameplay

7.0/10

It’s accessible and easy. Some enemies are tough and really require tactics to take down. The levels are too long and too easy to navigate through.

Graphics

7.3/10

Surprisingly crisp and detailed. Nothing amazing, but good for this type of game.

Sound

6.5/10

Decent voice-acting and an OK soundtrack.

Value

6.0/10

Roughly about a 6-8 hour game to get through the five missions.

Overall

7.0/10

I can not believe you get paid to do this... I.e. a review that no one's gonna read, for a game no one on this site will play...

Here, I'll sum up essentially what you said without even reading the review: "woo hoo, generic furry little animal out of his element, like every other children's film made after Toy Story. The kids'll love it."

I think comparing Id to Bundah is ludicrous. However, I do believe the previous comment was tasteless and completely irrelevant. Tano clearly puts effort into his reviews, whether people read them or not, and I think he should be commended for his effort.

F**k the haters, I read the review because I need to get my 8yo nephew a birthday present and I think this will do. He plays a lot of games and I want something that's not too short but easy enough for him to finish.

The review did what it was supposed to and unfortunately reviewing games that the average gamer won't even touch is part of the job for every games journo. I can see iddqd's saying and he's right, this isn't the sort of review that the majority of my360 users will be interested in, but at the end of the day Gaetano isn't here to cater just to "The majority of my360 users". He's here to cater for ALL my360 users.

The attacks that are aimed at iddqd are a bit off too. A lot of users suck up Gaetano's date on here and at least iddqd is actually challenging the guy. If everyone told Tano he was God, eventually it would start to sink in. I like the fact that iddqd challenges him. It makes the site a better place.

I got nothing against id in the forums. He's been around since i joined years ago, i'm used to him.

I just cant stand that he's relinquished his admin duties (for whatever reasons, i dont care, i dont want to get into it) and now all of the sudden the site is ruined by tano bla bla bla.

In saying that, he hasnt had a crack at tano in a while, so maybe its all over.

#1 thing that bugs me about this, more than the review itself is the fact that Gaetano won't let anyone else do feature reviews. You know why this is? He gets $60 (almost certainly a lot more, I don't know what they're paying now) for a review any number of members could do with a whole lot more motivation, commitment and effort, as well as with a lot less bias. I.e. he's more worried about what advertisers/companies think than whether the game is good or bad. That's why he gives his reviews all middle ground scores (6 to 9 with a few exceptions) which are essentially uncreative and conform to every possible video game review cliche imaginable.

I really hope this better explains my comment... If that's not him taking unfair control over the website, I don't know what is. Maybe a shock to you, but he does not own My360... and most of the things I discuss with Gaetano have been behind the scenes, I hate it when people put in their two cents despite not knowing a tenth of the story.

I hope you see this quick, too, because he will delete it like as though I was lying or something.

As i said, i dont know the full story of what happened between you and tano, and i dont want to know.

Either way, things are bound to change once someone is paid to be on here. That said, tano was a member before getting the job, so he's not just in it for the money.

If i were a young dude strapped for cash, and got a job like tano, ****ing oath i'd be wanting to do alot of reviews. But not letting other members do feature reviews? Heller? ICC? Rainbow did one on batman, i dont think it was feature though. But even though it wasnt, everyone read it. Everyone liked it. Alot of people look forward to tano's reviews. He does a top notch review everytime.

As for this review, well i cant say that i'v read it, but i sure wouldnt want to do it. Not even for $60.

And as for his scores, what game has ever needed a horrible score? I cant remember who did the review on fuel but that got trashed. Alot of games get great reviews because they are great. I haven't played this game, neither have you, so who's to say it doesnt deserve a good score?

Fuel was Heller, Heller whinges about everything.

You complain that Tano gets paid for these reviews, but he does heaps for this site and all the MySites. If he wasn't motivated to write reviews, then he wouldn't. People don't write for the hell of it, they write cause they want to.

All you do is whinge about how this site is run. You had your chance at admin and you threw in the towel, you don't get a chance to critize when you give up on being a responsible forum user because of weak excuses. Shut the **** up and get over it, nobody gives a **** about your stupid opinions.

Yeah, milky you pretty much don't know anything. I gave up my role as admin specifically so I could have more freedom to talk about the dumbness of the people (gaetano) who run the site, in order to change it for the better. I was threatened for saying this stuff about Gaetano... so I went one better and said I quit. I did not just throw in the towel, I've been here too long to watch Gaetano do this. And you're right, he doesn't write for the hell of it, he writes for the money and bashes out generic, boring, biased reviews that anyone could write. Honestly, I'm giving you the most truth you've ever heard about Gaetano, and you're taking cheap shots at me over that? I'm always made out to be the bad guy, but I'm the best friend this site has...

Heller and ICC are a different story, too... do you see them on the forums, involved in the community? They come here, do their job, go away, and are completely detached from the place. Once upon a time anyone could apply, now you have to ask Tano, and Tano will say no because he wants the money. Simple as that. You genuinely think that's fair play? Either of you could write better reviews, for more relevant games...

You did throw in the towel. I am admin over at MyBluRay, over the last year we have got sick of the lack of support from the MySites team so we decided to it all ourselves. The free admins did the reviews, the news, the articles, everything! Then the MySites team became interested and slowly have been trying to push out the involvment of the admin team, so you know what we do... we ignore them and keep doing what we were doing because ironically, the admins that do it for the passion make the better runners of the site. You had your chance to do that, you could have quit like a pansy or gone out in the blaze of glory trying to change the site. You say you didn't throw in the towel, but you thought it'd be easier to quit then to tackle the problem head on. Grow some balls and tackle the problem, don't quit, especially don't quit if you as much of a friend to this site as you claim. But I guess its too late now, good luck trying to make a difference now.

I didn't quit, I just stopped being admin. As an admin I had no say, now I can say what I want... without having that **** stuffed down my throat. You haven't dealt with Gaetano... and you don't know what you're talking about in the slightest. You just didn't see what I did as admin... you just assume that I quit then started bitching. I kept my issues with Gaetano behind closed doors for almost two years, and you think you're in a position to tell me how it is? I'm not saying anything here I haven't said a million times before, I'm just more vocal about it now. Enough with the personal attacks too, I never had anything against you Milky. It took more balls to throw my badge in his face than staying on and merrily waiting on the receiving end. Maybe it's a principal thing you wouldn't understand, but there were more important things to me than the delete, edit and block buttons.

I just don't agree with what your doing and I'm merely stating exactly what it sounds like. You do seem to be bitching because you couldn't get your way as an admin. Like you couldn't change the site so you quit.

You say you and Tano had run ins, then prove it. Show us the bad man that you believe Tano to be, stop just bagging him out and personally attacking him, because we haven't seen anything other than the cool dude that pretty much runs this site.

I'm not saying he isn't done shitty stuff, you just seem to be attacking him and saying "oh we've had run ins!". I've had run ins with most the people on this site, I'm not going to turn around and rape them behind their back.

How is this raping him behind his back? I have never said anything publicly that I haven't already drilled into his face somewhere else... If I could show you the admin thread or our MSN conversations I would... I don't believe he's a 'bad man', I just see the dodginess of the way he's running the joint. But he denies that he runs the place at all. I'm not on a vendetta (which is more than I can say for some admins) I've just been here too long to see it pretty much run by someone who is almost entirely detached from what this site should be, or what it was... Look at both our profiles, I've been a member here for almost twice as long as him. He says he was here before that, but if he was here from the beginning he'd understand what I meant when I say that the site started to change for the worst the moment he appeared and started making decisions. If you want to fault me on that, be my guest. I do not lie, and I don't do this for personal grudges.

You can write all the featured reviews you want. I don’t think I’ve ever personally said someone can’t. I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA where you got $60 from. I wish I got an extra $60 for every review. Other reviewers might get that, but I don’t. I have other duties at MyMedia, which have absolutely nothing to do with the forums or reviews or anything, and so the reviews for me are more of a passion. More of something I feel as though needs to be done.

And the fact that you’ve just insulted my integrity, saying I’m influenced by advertisers/companies, is friggin’ low. It shows how quality you are. We don’t discuss anything. You just cry and winge to me and disagree with everything I say.

Nothings changed from when I was employed from MyMedia to now. See the reviews from calabreseboy? That’s me you tool. I was writing them then, and shock I wasn’t getting paid to write them either.

Hey everyone, do you know what I said to id in the admin forum?

“Guys, I don’t think admin should be swearing.”

Id’s response?

“**** YOU GAETANO. SUCK MY **** GAETANO.”

After 3 pages of him abusing and swearing at me, I deleted all the post, INCLUDING MINE, because I didn’t want that negativity and utter crap in the thread. We were meant to be a team, but it was essentially Us vs. ID.

And to prove I’m not lying, I actually got the site owner (Mr360) to check the logs. That is, all the posts that were deleted. Don’t you think that if there was dodginess something would have been done?

Length here is not important to me. There are members here who have been here for 2 weeks that do more for this site than you. All you do is complain and bitch to people. You’re a cancer.

Hey Guys,

Anyone can add reviews, in fact you can win stuff through reviewer of the month adding user reviews!

Featured reviews are a little bit different, we do have a 'content team' for these. Tano doesn't decide who this involves, and there's a lot more than just him. We have about 4 who only do Wii reviews (as there are heaps more Wii games, even though most suck) then a few others. Between us we try to do as many games as possible, and it's not just Tano (I do mostly Wii & DS, but I did Beatles: Rock Band for 360 recently, Heller did a fair few before he left). When we have time we often do 'another takes' for big games, so you get an opinion from a few of us, and of course you can all add reviews to give your thoughts!

Guyver, Tano and myself work pretty closely to keep the site running with Mr360, but we make sure to involve all the admin and members where they know better than us. Trying to run 8 different mini-communities is hard, so we try to keep them all connected, while letting the admin, and members (MyMedia 8.0 request for comments, for example) work out what's best for each particular site. It's far from being what one person goes.

I know I don't post in the My360 forum that much, but I'm here everyday, and around MyMedia in general more than most. I also get to see another side to Tano, and what goes into making even small things happen. We put a lot of work into it, a lot of it during our own time, so we want to see the sites become even more successful.

So we have to balance keeping the existing community happy, and try to attract new members, new readers - which is a big challenge. 2 years ago MyMedia was all about the forums, and user content. And today we still are, except now there's also a bit of editorial content to help attract new readers, to help us grow, and I think we've got a pretty good balance. Which other gaming sites allow this much member participation?

Look at the other Australian-based gaming sites. I think we have more member participation and more editorial content than almost all of them (across all our sites). That's a massive achievement, and a lot of that success goes to what Tano has done (and also Guyver).

Just remember we all pour countless hours into all the sites (not just My360), a lot more than what is visible on site. Hopefully this creates a better experience for all members, and helps us grow to be one of the biggest Australian-based gaming sites around!
